2020 Hundred Day Challenge 1

I’ve worked out a schedule for the year and there will three challenge periods, each lasting for one hundred days. There will be a few weeks in between to evaluate what I did and plan for the next period.

For the first challenge I have five goals. Hopefully it isn’t too much to add onto my plate. The first goal is to declutter one hundred items. This is a continuation from last year. I have gotten rid of a lot of things but there is still stuff I think can be removed. One of the great things about last year’s work is that my hubby decided to join in. He is continuing to work on it this year and I’m hopeful that we will get this house decluttered this year.

The second goal is to stay within my budget. I need to pay closer attention to our spending and try to rein in our expenses. No more letting receipts pile up for months before figuring out where our money is going. I’m going to choose a weekly time where I enter receipts and check to see how things are going. I’m going to do a better job of using what food we have to try and bring down the grocery bill.

The third goal is to read 15 books. My to be read list has over two hundred books on it but when I go to the library I’m always seduced by the new titles and never seem to cross off anything on my list. I’m going to start using the request a book feature from my library website and get some books from my list. I’m also going to see if there are any more that are not really relevant anymore and take them off the list. I look at some of the titles and have no idea what they are about or why I put them on my list in the first pIace.  I want to read at least five books from my list during this challenge period.

The fourth goal is to exercise for at least ten minutes six times a week. I am very consistent with my am and pm stretching routine. In the morning I do a few yoga poses, hold a plank for one minute and do the neck and hip stretches. In the evening I do a few yoga poses and my neck and hip stretches. Monday through Friday I have been riding the stationary bike for ten minutes but on the weekends when I have my granddaughter I haven’t managed to fit it in. I’m going to try to take a walk on the weekends.

My fifth goal is to spend at least one hour a week working on a hobby. There are a lot of things I have the materials to do but haven’t taken the time to do them. I’m still working on what I’m going to do since there are so many possibilities. I know that the first one will be my granddaughter’s quilt. It was supposed to be done before she was born and she turned two last November. Definitely want to get it done.

Well I guess that is enough for now. I’ll be starting on Monday and I’ll be back some time next week to let you know how things are going.

Dad

So, as I mentioned in my last post, I have had a major disruption in my life recently.  My Dad went into the hospital in late January and on January 29th(the day  I was to begin my 100 day challenge), my sister called to say that the doctor didn’t think our dad would make it through the night.  I threw together a few things and left.

When I got to the hospital, Dad was alert and aware but his oxygen and blood pressure were unstable. The infection had become/had been ?? a blood infection. He had been scheduled to have tests done but they were unable to perform the tests.  It became clear that it was time to move to comfort measures and let things run their course.

We brought him home and had hospice come in.  We were given an estimate of 3-5 days but he lasted just over two weeks. Luckily for us he had only minor pain at the very end and just slipped peacefully away. I can not say enough about the hospice staff. They took care of so many little details, provided us with necessary supplies and were in daily to check on dad and give him a bath.  He was really touched by the pinning ceremony they did in honor of  his Army service . We were truly blessed to have them during this time.

Between caring for my dad, searching for paperwork(insurance polices, the will, veteran service info), helping my sister to begin to clear out the house, traveling and the funeral, I have gotten way off track yet again. My original 100 day challenge has been scrapped and I’ve been working on a 50 day challenge involving getting rid of one item per day and getting the business and personal tax information together. I’m giving myself some grace and not focusing on health as much right now. I need to see tangible results each day and that isn’t as easy when I’m working on my health.

Tidbit Thursday

Just another unedited, sloppy installment of the random thoughts rolling around in my head today…

I put out three large bags and two small containers of stuff for pick up by the Viet Nam Veterans of America. It feels so good to get those things out of the house.  My daughter took her snow board and a painting she had done and I tossed a Christmas dish towel that I couldn’t get clean. That brings my total up to 129 items! Unfortunately there is still a lot that could be cleaned out so I am going to continue working on this challenge next year.

We had a very nice visit with my dad, my sister and my niece and nephews. We took the cat which was an experience. He “talked” for almost all of the four hours we were in the car. He was not a fan of my niece’s dog – he would arch his back, hiss and put up his claws when the dog got too close.

As I suspected the girl was not able to make it but we had a nice visit last night. I finally got to meet the boyfriend. He was rather quiet but seems nice.  They got a pair of young cats for Christmas. Now the boy is wanting to get another cat as well. Not sure how I feel about that.

The boy got everything on his list but is still not satisfied. He is very happy with what he got but still wants more. He got some cash (in addition to the gifts) from his grandparents and is upset that we won’t take him shopping. He hasn’t even had time to explore everything he got and he wants more. Definitely need to work on this attitude.

I’ve been thinking about plans for next year but I haven’t settled on anything yet. What are you hoping to accomplish in 2017? Let me know in the comments.

Tidbit Tuesday

Just another sloppy, unedited installment of the random thoughts rolling around in my head today…

Finally went out and voted. I really struggled this year – not too impressed with the candidates. It is a shame that there weren’t better choices. I worry that no matter who is elected there will be problems moving forward. It seems that people are so much nastier this time around.

I didn’t get nearly as much done out in the garden as I could have. Looks like there will lots to clean up come spring. Need to come up with a plan to get things to a more manageable state.

Need to go through the Halloween stuff and see what is worth keeping and what I might want to get rid of.  I know there are some costumes that should go but it is like pulling teeth to get the boy to get rid of them. We’ll see if I can make some progress this time around. We ended up getting quite a few new decorations which I’m going to have to find room to store.
